Girls Rule - Boys Drool

“Girls Rule - Boys Drool” Did we really chant this when we were growing up?

And how about Irving Berlin’s song “Anything you can do, I can do better?” I don’t know about you, but I distinctly remember singing this when I was much younger.

And then we had the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match in 1973 between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. Touted as “a significant moment in the second wave of the women’s movement.”

It’s International Women’s Day - a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

Yes - it’s a time for celebrating - not competing or taunting. :)

I’m so happy that today we teach our daughters (and sons), our nieces (and nephews), our grand-daughters (and grand-sons) that it’s not just ok for little girls to play sports, enjoy science and space, design buildings, swing a hammer or wire a light fixture. We’re actually encouraging them to do so. And to do so in collaboration with the boys (and men) around us. Not as a competition (although who among us doesn’t have a bit of competitive spirit?). To do so not at the expense of others, but to the benefit of all.

Join me in celebrating International Women’s Day. Recognize a woman in your network with a note of courage, encouragement and/or thanks.  Whether it’s a text, email, phone call or good ole snail mail.  Share your thoughts and appreciation for all she is and does.
