The Happiness Advantage

In their January 2020 podcast, Cody Phillips and Chad Jones talk about lessons from Shawn Anchor’s book “The Happiness Advantage.” Little did they know when they recorded the podcast how this year would truly challenge our mindsets, our resilience and our ability to “find opportunity wherever we look. Even in the struggles, can we find the opportunity for growth?”

In his book, Anchor says, “Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we’ll be happy. If we can just find that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around.”

Anchor offers 7 practical and practiced principles to improve performance and maximize potential.

In the podcast, Chad and Cody talk about a few of these lessons and how they can help create a competitive advantage through positive psychology and continue to grow on a personal and professional level.

The key take-aways:

  • Believe in yourself!  Believe in the happiness advantage.

  • Surround yourself with the right people...in and outside of work.

  • Find purpose and meaning in what you are doing. Focus not on the outcome, but on the purpose and process to get there.  Find wins in your journey.

I’m an optimist at heart and believe in the power of a positive outlook.  Every morning I think about 3 things I’m grateful for.  This helps me start my day with a positive (happy) tone.  What routines do you use to build and keep your Happiness Advantage?
