RBG

In honor of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, I listened to a few podcasts featuring stories about her childhood, education, life and experiences before and during her tenure in the Supreme Court.  I read several articles about the ground-breaking, trailblazing actions she accomplished.  And I re-watched the movie “RBG.”  I learned a lot about her philosophy, resilience and attitude.

Here’s what inspired me most:

  • She fought not just for women’s rights, but for equal rights.  And her methodical approach bringing case by case to the supreme court paved the way for ground-breaking legislation.

  • Her husband, Marty Ginsburg, campaigned for Ruth to get the nomination to the Supreme Court.  He was so proud of her and supported her, promoted her.  This reminds me of my husband, Ron, who nominated me for the NAED Trailblazer Award and continues to be proud of me and support my adventures.

  • She was one of 9 women in her class of 500 at Harvard.  Paving the way for so many of us.  And her grand-daughter was in the first graduating class of Harvard that reached 50:50 gender parity in 2017.  What a long way we’ve come and yet, what a long way we have to go.

And a few quotes I love:

“I pray that I may be all that she (her mother) would have been had she lived in an age when women could aspire and achieve and daughters are cherished as much as sons” - RBG in her speech for the announcement to her Supreme Court nomination

“She was not the first woman on the US Supreme Court…But in terms of lasting impact, so far she is the greatest woman to be on the Supreme Court” - Arthur Miller, Professor and colleague of RBG at Harvard in his interview for CNN documentary.

Isn’t it fitting that in her death, she continues to blaze the trail, becoming the first woman to lie in state in the Capitol?

What did RBG inspire in you?
